Eniola Aluko column: England forward has no fear for World Cup

Eniola Aluko column: England forward has no fear for World Cup

England and Chelsea forward Eniola Aluko will be writing a regular column for the BBC Sport website throughout the World Cup.

After making Mark Sampson's England squad she explains how personality testing and team development sessions have led to more openness in the squad as it prepares for the tournament in Canada.

Recent personality testing within the England squad has shown that I'm a dominant-red type, apparently.

That means I'm a go-getter, determined and a no-nonsense person. That might not be news to some people!

This discovery has been part of our preparations for the World Cup in Canada next month, where our manager Mark Sampson has welcomed an external company into the squad to see what motivates us as players and how we can improve communication between each other.

In addition to the personality testing, we have had team development sessions where we have been encouraged to be more open with each other. It is perhaps a trait that has been lacking in the past.

The sessions have revealed some powerful stories amongst the 23-strong squad, which you can only be inspired by. It is an incredible group of people.

That's why I was particularly pleased that my Chelsea team-mates and friends Katie Chapman and Claire Rafferty made the England squad.

I have witnessed first-hand how Katie has returned to the team after a five-year absence because her England contract was cancelled. Claire has come back from two cruciate knee injuries since playing in the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

Others in the squad have learned to be more open with their sexuality and how it impacts on their lives, some have overcome deaths in their family and reversed their decisions to quit football. And there are those who have battled with depression  to make it to the pinnacle of the sport.

Sometimes I look at my life and think it's been difficult but then I might look at my team-mate to the right of me in the dressing room and I think, "gosh, it's been tougher for them".

We don't want to let each other down in Canada. And if you are playing with people who inspire you then you are going to run that extra yard for each other when it matters most.

The England World Cup squad

The England World Cup squad was announced on Monday at the Canadian Embassy in Trafalgar Square

No secrets among us

When I play football my personality is hardly a secret: I want to win and I'm not here to mess about. I see it as a positive thing and, if I wasn't like that, I don't think I would have achieved as much in my life.

Off the pitch, I'm quite pensive and try to reflect on things but I'm still honest and open with myself and other people. So after the testing, you'd hope that my team-mates know more about how I operate as a player and a person, while I can better understand them.

Being away from home for up to six weeks is a long period of time, so it's about realising how to best communicate with each other, particularly in times of adversity.

All about Eniola Aluko

Born: 21 February 1987, Nigeria

Forward for Chelsea Ladies and England (90 caps, 32 goals)

Ex-clubs: Birmingham, Charlton, St Louis Athletica, Atlanta Beat, Sky Blue

Qualified as a sports and entertainment lawyer in 2014

Brother Sone plays for Hull City in the Premier League

The Women's Super League is hotly contested and you can have instances where you lock horns with players at different clubs but now we all have to come together as team-mates and perform.

There are some great characters in the squad for differing reasons. You may have seen the bubbly personalities like Jill Scott and Lianne Sanderson, who are big on social media and always keep the energy levels high.

You have quieter characters like Katie who might not say much but is an extremely strong person. Our captain Steph Houghton is a fantastic example to the team, while Casey Stoney is very experienced. Our vice-captain Jordan Nobbs may be young at 22, but she is very confident in herself. Overall, we have a really good blend.

It's no coincidence that since Sampson took over, playing for England is enjoyable and this sort of psychological help can only be of benefit to us. We are very privileged to represent our country and we respect the fact that it's a blessing to play in a World Cup. I am certainly going to enjoy it and I feel like I have unfinished business too.

Eniola Aluko

Eniola Aluko was criticised on social media for missing chances in England's 2011 World Cup opener

Learning lessons from Germany

This will be my third World Cup with England but it's fair to say I've not shown my full capabilities in the tournament so far.

Four years ago, I got some stick via Twitter after I missed a few chances during England's opening game, a 1-1 draw with Mexico.

Looking back at it, the criticism was probably fair but I was quite fragile at the time, new to social media and shocked at some of the abuse I was receiving.

You can only learn from those experiences and after my best goalscoring period for England during qualification for this World Cup, I know I am a lot sharper as a striker now. I've learned more about finishing and have become a much better player during my time at Chelsea.

As a person, I'm a lot stronger too. I remember the pain of the quarter-final defeat by France in 2011, I can think back to the early exit at the European Championship two years ago.

But I'm in an environment under the manager where I can be confident, my club form has been good and I'm hoping I can be one of the best forwards at the World Cup.

This time I will have no fears.

Steven Gerrard's Liverpool career in stickers

Steven Gerrard's Liverpool career in stickers

In 1998, a fresh-faced Steven Gerrard walked into a barber's shop as a promising Liverpool youngster and asked for a short back and sides.

And, as these Merlin Premier League stickers chronicling Gerrard's career will attest, nothing has changed in the subsequent years.

Number two in the barber's chair, number one in the heart of modern-day Liverpool fans.

Steven Gerrard

Stickers courtesy of www.toppsfootball.co.uk

First senior steps - 1998-99

When Steven Gerrard replaced Vegard Heggem with a minute to go of a 2-0 victory over Blackburn on 29 November 1998, few Liverpudlians could have predicted the future the fresh-faced 18-year-old would have.

The breakthrough - 1999-2000

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry quizzed Patrick Vieira on their way down the Anfield tunnel after a defeat: "Who was that kid in midfield?" Gerrard was shown his first red card against Everton and netted his first goal against Sheffield Wednesday.

Goals and trophies arrive - 2000-2001

Gerrard, who was given the number 17 shirt having previously worn 28, was named the Professional Footballers' Association's Young Player of the Year, PFA Fans' Player of the Year, was chosen in the PFA Team of the Year and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup.

International calibre - 2001-02

The Whiston-born player won the Uefa Super Cup as Liverpool finished runners-up domestically for the first time in over a decade and his England career took off as he scored the second goal in a 5-1 win over Germany.

The armband - 2002-03

As Sami Hyypia struggled for form, Gerrard took on the club captaincy. "Now he is 23 and he is ready, there has been a maturing in his game and his personality," said Gerard Houllier, then the Liverpool boss.

First sign of doubt - 2003-04

"For the first time in my career I've thought about the possibility of moving on," said Gerrard at the end of the season as Rafael Benitez moved into Anfield and Chelsea tried to lure the midfielder to Stamford Bridge.

One night in Istanbul - 2004-05

Gerrard lifted the most famous trophy in club football to conclude one of the most dramatic nights in Liverpool's history, was named Uefa Club Footballer of the Year yet still came close to leaving Anfield.

The Gerrard final - 2005-06

Gerrard's last-minute 30-yard strike to force extra time against West Ham in the FA Cup final will light up highlight reels for decades to come. Gerrard, then 25, also became the first Liverpool player since John Barnes in 1988 to be voted the PFA Players' Player of the Year.

Champions League defeat - 2006-07

Gerrard experienced defeat in the Champions League final by AC Milan but Liverpool finished third in the Premier League as he made the fifth of his eight appearances in the PFA Team of the Year.

Partnering Fernando - 2007-08

The Liverpool number eight found himself in a new role just off striker Fernando Torres and both players were nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award. Off the field, Gerrard became a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

A title chance - 2008-09

In his most prolific season Gerrard managed a first Premier League hat-trick in a win over Aston Villa in March 2009 and got closer to a league title than ever before - losing out by four points to Manchester United - as he won the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

Back to reality - 2009-10

After a summer in which a jury at Liverpool Crown Court found Gerrard not guilty of affray, Liverpool struggled as Benitez left at the end of the season, though their 29-year-old captain became one of just 13 men to pass 500 appearances for the club.

England captain to the operating table - 2010-11

In a season in which Gerrard captained his country, Liverpool's team needed surgery and so did he, with a groin problem ending his season in March as Liverpool swapped manager Roy Hodgson for Kenny Dalglish.

Hands back on trophies - 2011-12

After turning down a summer move to Bayern Munich, Gerrard lifted the club's first trophy in six years - the League Cup - and scored a hat-trick against local rivals Everton on his 400th Premier League appearance.

The foundation of a rebuild - 2012-13

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers got to work on re-building the club and Gerrard was at the centre of his work, playing 36 times in the league as the club finished seventh.

A title run, a costly slip - 2013-14

"It's probably been the worst three months of my life," Gerrard said after the slip which handed Demba Ba a Chelsea goal, Manchester City the initiative in the title race and ruined hopes of a first Liverpool title in 24 years.

The final chapter - 2014-15

His sending off after 38 seconds of coming on against Manchester United as a substitute in March 2015 was the behaviour of a man overcome by frustration, while his late winner to beat Queens Park Rangers in May was the act of a leader and match-winner Liverpool fans will never forget.

A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth ONE point. The exact score earns THREE points.

Last weekend, Lawro got six correct results from 10 Premier League games, with three perfect scores.

His score of 12 points saw him beat heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who picked four correct results, but with no perfect scores. That gave her a total of four points.

We are keeping a record of the totals for Lawro and his guests (below), and showing a table of how the Premier League would look if all of Lawro's predictions were correct (at the bottom of the page).

West Brom are safe thanks to their point against Newcastle last time out so Baggies boss Tony Pulis has done his job again.

With the title already secured, Chelsea changed things around a little bit against Liverpool and I expect Jose Mourinho will play one or two young players this time too.

But just because they have achieved what they set out to, I don't see either manager abandoning their principles.

The main aim for both of them on Monday night will still be not to be beaten.

Steven Gerrard: Who said farewell best on social media?

Steven Gerrard: Who said farewell best on social media?

Mario Balotelli put pen to paper, Joey Barton tried cutting humour and David Beckham nailed it in one word as the world of football turned to social media to say farewell to Steve Gerrard.

The Liverpool midfielder's final game at Anfield ahead of a summer move to Los Angeles ended in a flat 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace but the Reds captain, 34, may crack a smile when he checks his social media accounts.

Here, BBC Sport presents the best and worst on show in our first and only Steven Gerrard social media tribute awards.

Best individual effort - Mario Balotelli

In an age of tweets, texts and emails, the personalised touch of pen on paper has been lost. But not to Mario Balotelli.

Mario Balotelli

Balotelli posted an image of his letter on Instagram on Saturday morning

The Italy striker, known for doing things a little differently, has played alongside Gerrard for less than a season but was moved to write his feelings in a letter before sharing his effort with his followers on Instagram.

Playing with Gerrard has been "an amazing and unforgettable experience" for Balotelli. "It is a pleasure to leave free-kicks and penalties to you," he added.

Well done Mario, you take our award for best effort. Fill your boots taking set-pieces next season, although it may not be at Anfield.

Most nostalgic effort - John Arne Riise

Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise celebrate

Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise formed part of Liverpool's triumphant Champions League side of 2005

Saying goodbye (or "farvel" in Norwegian) after 17 years reduces some to rubble.

John Arne Riise, once a Liverpool regular alongside the departing legend, opened his heart on his personal blog  with a post titled "Thank you captain fantastic".

"Gerrard is not just a player. He is "THE" player, the best I have ever played with," wrote the 34-year-old, who now plays in Cyprus.

"He is the greatest Liverpool has ever had. I'm honoured that I can say I played seven years with the legend himself. I won Champions League with him, even though I think he won it for us."

And they say Scandinavians are a cold people. Not John Arne.

Humour award - Joey Barton

Over 17 years, Steven Gerrard's consistency was rarely questioned on the field, and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton - another Liverpudlian - noted another Gerrard constant.

Steven Gerrard

Between 2000 and 2005, Gerrard's hair barely changed but a quiff appeared from around 2009 onwards

"One of his biggest achievement in my eyes, which often goes under the radar, is having the same haircut for so long," tweeted Barton.  "It must be incredibly tough to ignore the trends and stick with the tried and tested 'no 2 on the top and 1 on the sides' for over a decade.

"The highest compliment I could pay him is, he's a player I'd be proud to tell my grandchildren that I once played against. His level of loyalty is unparalleled. People talk about his loyalty to his club? Look at the loyalty he has shown his barber?"

When you retire Joey, the haircut look back will be eye opening. Well done on landing our humour award.

Emotional rollercoaster award - Daniel Sturridge

Goodbyes can be tough. Daniel Sturridge - currently injured - missed this one through injury. There will be no goodbye hug, no lump in the throat or watery eyes for Sturridge for now.

Steven Gerrard in badge-kissing celebration mode

Daniel Sturridge says Gerrard (above) helped him settle at Anfield when he joined Liverpool in 2013

On Instagram  he posted: "The greatest player to ever wear a Liverpool shirt. Wish I was there to share his last moments and season with the club. He's taught me a lot about football on and off the field and made me feel welcome at the club on my first day when I was nervous and had no idea what to expect. As the saying goes you don't know what you've got til it's gone but for me we already know what we'll miss."

Praise, warmth, companionship and a look to the future. That one had it all Daniel.

Most understated award - David Beckham

David Beckham Instagram post of him and Steven Gerrard

Thousands of words of praise packed social media, but simplicity proved powerful in one David Beckham word. "Loyalty..." he posted on Instagram  along with an image of himself and Gerrard on England duty.

Concise.

Most committed award - Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki watches Liverpool on TV

Caroline Wozniacki wore a signed Liverpool shirt to watch the Reds' defeat by Crystal Palace

If it's a big occasion you have to dress the part. We will never know what Riise wore to compose his compelling blog or what Sturridge had on as he poured his heart out.

What we do know is tennis star Caroline Wozniacki wore a signed Liverpool shirt to watch the match and, as a result, wins our most committed award.

Sartorial suitability from the Dane.

Most respectful award - Tim Cahill

Stanley Park separates Anfield and Goodison Park and while both Liverpool and Everton are often there for one another in their time of need, kind words from rival players are rarely shared.

Tim Cahill

Tim Cahill (right) uploaded this image of him battling with Gerrard in a Merseyside derby

But ex-Toffee Tim Cahill posted on Instagram:  "Farewell to Steven Gerrard, it was a privilege to have played against this guy in the derbies and more importantly to see his passion for his club. Yes he's a red and I'll always be blue but I have a lot of respect for this guy. Liverpool will not be the same without him."

Cahill went where few rival players go in publicly praising an old enemy. Respect to you Tim.

Through gritted teeth award - Tony Bellew

We do not want to anger British cruiserweight Tony Bellew in any way and as a proud Evertonian, fair play to him for gritting his teeth to champion Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard

Tony Bellew claims Steven Gerrard has broken his heart on times

"My eldest boy was star struck meeting Steven," he posted on Instagram.  "Broke my heart many a time but can't deny what a great footballer the lad is and a true role model for upcoming footballers and Scousers especially."

Bellew shows class transcends rivalry.

Most controversial - Asmir Begovic

Asmir Begovic tweet

Asmir Begovic believes Gerrard has starred more than Premier League greats such as Thierry Henry and Ryan Giggs

At what point does one rein oneself in with all the gushing praise?

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic - fresh from a draw at Burnley - went big with his tribute, calling Gerrard the Premier League's "best ever".

Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard and Ryan Giggs may not share your opinion but enjoy the award Asmir.

Room for improvement award - Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer was England captain when Gerrard broke into the team

The standard of Gerrard-themed tweets from footballers past and present has been lofty to say the least this week. Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer kept it simple.

It's no nonsense, we will give him that and, to be fair, he only joined Twitter  this week, but it's very much the 'one hand in the air celebration' of tributes from Shearer.

Garth Crooks's team of the week: Toure, Fer, Mane, Lukaku

Garth's Team of the Week

We're in for an intriguing finish at the bottom of the Premier League next Sunday after this weekend's games.

Hull are in deep trouble after losing 2-0 at Tottenham, but Newcastle are by no means safe after their 2-1 defeat at relegated QPR.

Aston Villa are safe, though, despite a 6-1 hammering at Southampton, as are Leicester after a 0-0 draw at Sunderland, who still need one more point.

It was an emotional weekend too, as Steven Gerrard played his final home game for Liverpool, who were beaten 3-1 at home by Crystal Palace.

Here are the players who I thought excelled and have earned themselves a place in my team of the week.

GOALKEEPER - Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)

Kasper Schmeichel

Kasper Schmeichel has helped Leicester keep three consecutive clean sheets - for the the first time in the top flight since August 2000

I nearly changed my mind after Manchester City keeper Joe Hart's superb save from Swansea defender Federico Fernandez's header on Sunday - but I've gone with Kasper Schmeichel. His save from Sebastian Larsson's free kick and then another from Adam Johnson later in the match gave you some indication of why Leicester have kept five clean sheets in the last six games.

I have been very impressed with the way Schmeichel has acclimatised to life in the Premier League. He has slowly worked his way up the leagues and into the big time where he has coped with the pressures of being at the bottom as well as anyone. If you are a goalkeeper and have the name Schmeichel, a lot is expected.

DEFENDER - Antonio Valencia (Manchester United)

Antonio Valencia

Manchester United have a 61% win rate when Antonio Valencia has played this season but have won just one of the six games he has missed (a 17% win rate)

The last time Manchester United met Arsenal at Old Trafford was in the FA Cup, when Antonio Valencia's back pass allowed Danny Welbeck to seal the tie. There were no such mistakes from the full-back during Sunday's 1-1 draw. The Ecuador international was as solid as a rock and full of running against a very dangerous Arsenal side.

It will be very interesting to see if Southampton's full-back Nathaniel Clyne joins United's ranks in the close season to bolster a position Valencia has made his own.

DEFENDER - John Stones (Everton)

John Stones

John Stones has played 43 league games for Everton and had just one shot on target - his goal against Manchester United last month

It is clear that some sides cope with European football better than others. Everton seem to be one of those teams who found the Europa League challenging. However, there is one player who looks to have benefited from the experience and that is John Stones.

The defender's performance during Saturday's 2-1 win at West Ham demonstrated how much the game time has helped him. Against the Hammers, he made important blocks when he needed to and showed tremendous composure when he had to. A player developing fast.

DEFENDER - Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling has made 149 clearances - no player has made more in the Premier League this season

It hasn't gone unnoticed that in the absence of Wayne Rooney, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal made Chris Smalling his captain against Arsenal. The armband probably says more about the development of the centre-back and the future role he has to play at Old Trafford.

His performance against the Gunners was consistently high but what is becoming glaringly apparent are his leadership qualities. Perhaps England manager Roy Hodgson might start thinking about Smalling in this area too.

DEFENDER - Danny Rose (Tottenham)

Danny Rose

Danny Rose has been involved in seven Premier League goals this season - scoring three and assisting four - only Leighton Baines (11) and Branislav Ivanovic (nine) have a better record than that

He may well hold his mouth in embarrassment. Having beaten Hull's offside trap, the Tottenham full-back miscued his volley and completely fooled goalkeeper Steve Harper as a result.

Danny Rose loves to get into attacking positions and added to his goal tally against a desperate Hull as a result. Rose also heaped more misery on Steve Bruce, who not only has to cope with the enforced absence of Jake Livermore but now faces a win-or-bust match against Manchester United on the final day of the Premier League season.

MIDFIELDER - Leroy Fer (QPR)

Leroy Fer

Leroy Fer has scored three goals in his last five games for Queens Park Rangers

How QPR could have done with Leroy Fer during that crucial period before they were doomed to the Championship. His second-half strike and all-round performance against Newcastle were brilliant. It will be very interesting to see whether Chris Ramsey can keep the Dutchman at Loftus Road and help the Hoops back into the Premier League. He's definitely one of the few players worth keeping.

MIDFIELDER - Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure has become the fourth player to score 50 Premier League goals for Manchester City, matching Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko

Some pundits have suggested, wrongly in my view, that Yaya Toure is past his best and surplus to requirements as Manchester City start their rebuilding programme next season.

They may have a point about pastures new but the way he strolled through Sunday's 4-2 win at Swansea and still managed to destroy the opposition suggests he far from past it. Manchester City need to be very careful not to let Yaya leave the Etihad Stadium and fall into the hands of their fiercest rivals. I can assure City that they are watching this situation very closely.

FORWARD - Shane Long (Southampton)

Shane Long

Shane Long has been involved in five of Southampton's last eight goals (scoring two, assisting three)

Shane Long assisted the final goal of Sadio Mane's hat-trick against Aston Villa with some wonderful play on the left, and got a return for his efforts when he added a nice little tap-in himself a few minutes later.

But it was Long's second goal that captured everyone's imagination. Having stolen the ball from Ashley Westwood, the Southampton man saw Villa keeper Shay Given off his line and sent a beautifully curling shot into the top corner of the net. Absolutely superb.

FORWARD - Sadio Mane (Southampton)

Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane scored Southampton's first Premier League hat-trick since October 2002

This lad was electric. Three goals in three minutes for the Senegalese striker says all you need to know about the impact this player had as Villa were demolished. Having said that, I am still trying to work out which team turned up at St Mary's because it didn't look anything like the Aston Villa I was raving about last week.

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton said on Final Score that he thought that Mane had proved himself worthy of a move to a big club next season based on his performances. That's the last thing Saints manager Ronald Koeman wants to hear.

FORWARD - Yannick Bolasie (Crystal Palace)

Yannick Bolasie

Yannick Bolasie has scored four goals for Crystal Palace this season - but none at home

Yannick Bolasie struck the bar and provided the assist for Wilfried Zaha to score a decisive goal as Crystal Palace won at Anfield. And Bolasie might have scored a couple of goals himself as he ripped through the Liverpool defence almost at will.

Palace may have provided Steven Gerrard with a guard of honour to mark his last game at Anfield but that was the only thing Alan Pardew and his team gave Liverpool or their captain all evening.

STRIKER - Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has scored in each of his six appearances in all competitions for Everton against West Ham

What a second half of the season for Everton and Romelu Lukaku. The Belgium striker, along with his team-mates, have battled their way through a difficult period and look more like the team who finished fifth last season.

Lukaku could have had a couple of goals against West Ham but in the end had to settle for the one - which was the winner. The striker's confidence has returned along with that of his team. So why are some Everton fans picking chairman Bill Kenwright out for criticism? He paid £28m for Lukaku, who helped to get them into Europe. What more do they want?
